Helpful tips to living a better life

Setting Goals

Setting and having goals is probably the most avoided method of achieving success in life. Most people just go through life waiting for good things to happen to them. They don’t make a conscious effort to figure out what they want in life.

We’ll all heard those stories where someone is just walking down the street and a big time movie producer approaches them for a dream role in a movie or TV show. I know of one case where this actually did happen but the truth is it is extremely rare and it requires that you have a certain look. Even when a person does experience an unexpected opportunity they are often unprepared to take advantage of it and usually end up worse than before.

It is not enough to have goals. You also have to write them down. If you don’t write down your goals they end up being vague wishes that never get acted on.

Your goals need to be specific and there needs to be a time frame attached to them. You can’t write down vague goals like “Be Rich!”. They have to be quantifiable and time-boxed like “Earn $100,000 per year by 2015”.

There’s more to goal setting then just writing them down but this is the most significant and powerful step in the process. There are many resources that discuss goal setting but probably the best resource is Brian Tracy’s Goals!: How to Get Everything You Want — Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible. I refer to this book often as I set my own goals and I highly recommend it.
