One of key elements of goal setting is having a clear idea of what your vision of success is. If you haven’t established exactly what it is that you want then what you end up with is whatever life happens to throw at you. Once you know what you want, then you need to figure out what you need to do to get there.

It is important that your vision of success and happiness is your own. Often we are guided by what others expect of us. In your social circle there may be a predefined concept of what success looks like. It may be a big house, expensive car with a career as a medical doctor or lawyer. You own personal vision of success may be drastically different. On the other hand don’t assume that just because it is expected, that is it wrong for you. Often our values are in line with the culture we were raised in.

The scary part about setting goals is that in that pursuit our vision of what we want may change. There are a number of books and experts out there that tell you to stay focused and committed to what you want to achieve but there is very little advice that mentions what to do when our vision of success changes. It may be that our new vision is only a slight departure from what we originally wanted, in fact that should be expected. On the other hand, it is not uncommon for people to complete change direction to something entirely different. It is likely such drastic changes are a result of not knowing what they really wanted for themselves in the first place.

Once your have your vision of success in mind you need to commit to it and start aligning your life and habits toward achieving your goals. The person who wants a family and a stable career, but can’t give up the nightlife and one-night stands is not committed to their vision. The person who wants to see the world and travel, but marries young and buys a house is not committed to their vision.

Commitment to vision is not selfish. In fact, you owe to those you care about to pursue what you want otherwise you will set them up for disappointment later when you start to fight against their expectations. Be clear about what you want and ask for their support. The sooner you do this, the better.
